After Care

Care of the Baby After the Circumcision
  1. The baby may eat normally.

  2. If he seems particularly fussy you may give the baby Tylenol (1/2 dropper) every 4 hours as needed, for no more than 24 hours.  (Do not use Motrin in the first 24 hours) (most infants do not need this)

  3. Do not worry about a small amount of bleeding over the first day or two.

  4. Often a thin yellow scab can form in the first few days. This is normal and usually falls off after 4-5 days. Until then, please give him sponge baths only. If the penis does get soiled, you may use a mild soap and warm water to gently remove any debris. Pat it dry before reapplying the Vaseline and gauze.

  5. Change the dressing after each diaper change, using a generous amount of Vaseline on gauze until the penis looks healed, approximately 5-7 days.

  6. After it is healed, if you cannot see the entire head of the penis, PUSH (do not pull) downward, any skin covering the head of the penis. If it doesn’t easily separate, you may use a wet Q-tip, gently pushing as you might push a cuticle. Do this around the penis, avoiding the 6:00 position. Do this until the groove just below the head of the penis is seen. No other care should be needed.

Notify me immediately if any of the following occur:

  • Excessive bleeding – greater than 25 cents size soaked through the gauze pad.

  • Unusual or excessive swelling

  • Signs of infection
